Foundation Software, Inc., based in Ohio, was founded in 1985 with the goal of developing software for the construction industry. The company introduced its current product, Foundation for Windows, in March 2000. Foundation is a fully integrated construction accounting, job cost, scheduling and construction project management software system that is built using a Microsoft SQL Server database. The company states that approximately 60% of their customers are specialty trade contractors; 10% are general contractors and homebuilders; and 30% are heavy/highway contractors. Foundation offers powerful payroll features that are best suited for small to medium sized labor-intensive contractors, although the company does have some clients with annual revenues in the $100M range.
Available Foundation construction software modules include job costing, general ledger, consolidated general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, equipment usage and maintenance, inventory, purchase orders & subcontracts, time & material billing, unit price billing, executive management and document control. Additionally, Foundation integrates with various third-party estimating systems, timecard entry systems, inventory tracking systems and a service billing module. Particular strengths of Foundation are its strong query and report writing abilities, simple-to-use transaction voids and full audit trails. However, the product's construction project management software and service dispatch capabilities are relatively basic.
