Executive Summary
Microsoft Dynamics GP has been on the market the longest among high end PC Windows-based accounting systems. First released in 1993, Microsoft Dynamics GP (Microsoft Dynamics GP was acquired by Microsoft in April 2001) is now shipping Release 9 – its ninth generation graphical solution.  Therefore, it has achieved a unique level of stability, maturity, and technological leadership in its market segment. 

The true strength of Dynamics GP is in it financial applications along with distribution capabilities. It also provides many user options for tailoring the system to individual needs for lookups, posting,options,  custom reports, menu organization . You can also attach notes to screens or master records. In addition to text, the notes fields allow for any OLE compliant object to be attached.  This means you can store images, multimedia files, and documents in the note field.

Smartlists provide easy access to master records, transactions and windows within Microsoft Dynamics GP.  When used as an inquiry tool, Smartlists offer easy access to Card and Inquiry information, reducing the reliance on Lookup windows and the need to print many reports. With Smartlists, customers can easily create queries to get exactly the information they need

Using VBA, you can add new fields to screens, and create additional business logic to enforce business rules.  For example, you can create VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) scripts that validate data, or perform other processes which alter the way that Microsoft Dynamics GP behaves. 

The Integration Manager allows you to safely perform conversions from your pre-existing financial data into Microsoft Dynamics GP, and easily create integrations between Microsoft Dynamics GP and external applications such as databases, legacy systems and other sources.  Both master file and transaction data can be easily integrated, either on a one time or recurring basis

As with any software, Dynamics GP has its downside. Some users have found it’s posting routines laborious, data entry screens cluttered,  and the FRx report writer hard to learn and use.  The product is nothing special for most  industry verticals. Project management and job cost are not strengths of the system. User need to be careful that that their  Dynamics GP reseller has expertise in their industry, such as manufacturing and construction,  so that they get everything they have been promised. Of course, this is true of any software reseller.

Users who buy Dynamics GP pay a premium for the Microsoft and Great Plains name. Prospective buyers should be sure they are getting enough benefit to warrant the added expense.
